is it over? or is it just the beginning??

Mummy's weight = 64.0kg (+10kg) jialet a lot of work to doooo.... =(

It has been 3 weeks since BB Hayden has arrived =)  I guess we are coping... in some ways or another... we have our ups and downs.. elders' advice vs new parents' ideas.... well I guess will just have to let the new parents work it out and everything will be fine =)  Thanks Daddy for giving Mummy all the encouragement and sayangs he's giving me instead of the little bundle of joy =P

These 3 weeks have been the most eventful... so much has happened and Mummy don't even know where to start blogging.... maybe I shd share my labour =) before Mummy forgets everything =P

14 March 2011 (Monday)

Everything was fine... until Mummy's last checkup at 1600H.

1600 - Usual routine test of weight and BP check... opps last check, 73 kg!! whooping 19 kg increase at week 39 =S

1630 - Dr John Tee saw Mummy and asked,"still no signs? can't be.... come let me check"
He did a membrane sweep, and said,"ok already dilate 2cm and bleeding... you should feel contractions tonight or tommorrow.  If there is still no signs, check yourself in on 16 March 0700H."  Gulps.  So it is really coming!!

1700 - Daddy and Mummy were waiting to pay... and Mummy already starting to shiver... Mummy had been feeling contractions... but not regular and not very painful too....  Daddy said," Let's go have Pastamania, might be the last meal"  and he is so right......

2000 - Mummy went to the washroom... and saw blood - one of the signs to show that labour is coming... and this time really feel "menstral-cramp" like contractions.... Freaked out... Lucky there was a Dial-A-Nurse service...  We were advised to wait till contractions become regular ie 5-6mins per contractions before checking in.... We quickly did all the last minute packing and went to rest early....

15 March 011 (Tuesday)

0000H, 0200H, 0400H, 0600H - more and more contractions.... at 5-6mins interval... though lasting for abt 15-20secs each time.....  but somehow i could still fall slep in between the contractions... only waking up at the above hours to monitor if the contractions are really 5-6mins apart... the last thing I would want is to give birth at homeeee!!!

0730H (Finally) - Mummy turned over to sleepy Dadddy and said,"I think this is it.... quite pain and already 5mins apart." The nurse on the Dial-a-Nurse service confirmed it... Mummy went to bathe first while Daddy packed The Bags.. Just in time, Grandma popped in with breakfast... She was worried as Mummy told her that she bled last night... We had a quick breakfast... and got ready to check in....

1000H - KKH Delivery Suite
Erm we saw quite a few Daddys-to-be waiting at the waiting area, and some preggies checking in on their own... Guess what? The nurse on duty told us that the suite is full house today!! =S I was like ?????? is this a good day or what??  The only thing we could do is wait.......

1030H - Observation Ward
Mummy had to be sent to the observation ward, where the nurses strapped on the fetal monitoring devices to monitor my contractions and baby's heartbeat...  The nurses told me that my contractions were very regular already, and a mid-wife came to check my progress.... I was only 3cm dilated!! meaning after a night of contractions I had only dliated 1cm???

I couldn't imagine how I can survive till 10cm dilation...... The idea of epidural kept haunting me..... I was thinking if I was already quite dilated (read: 6-7cm) at the time I checked myself in, I should be able to handle the labour without it.... who knows I was only 3cm.... such a long way to go... At this rate, it could mean that you would only arrive in the night or even midnight!

1230H - Observation Ward
The nurse notified me that they have prepared the labour suite for me.  Dr John Tee will be breaking my water bag and I will be delivering today.. ha in the midst of all the pain... i could still feel hungry =P so Daddy got me some soy milk and a kaya pancake as I could only take something light.....

1400H - The Labour ward
I was already shivering when I reached the door of my ward.... The incubator and couch... everything was all ready... except for me I guess....  I was asked to change into my gown as they are going to put a drip on me already....

and then the ultimate question came..... "Do you need an epidural?"

I was already unable to walk with the pain.... I knew I had the answer when I was in the Observation Ward... "Yes"

"ok, I will let your gynae know..."

1430H - The Saviour
Dr John came to break the water bag, using a long sterile stick to insert from down there.. wow really a huge gush of water!! luckily it did not happen on our expensive mattress =S immediately we can see the tummy decreasing in size.....

Dr John said tt I can take the epidural n the anthesicist on duty will come n explain the procedure to me....

Shortly after, she came... asking if I had any questions on the procedure n the probable side effects.... Seriously, I had no questions, as I had read a lot abt it n its side effects, and of course the relief it can give... The procedure soon started... n gradually I felt lesser pain.. n finally some relief, after so many hours of contractions..... I quickly grabbed the chance to nap, as I didnt sleep much since the night before....

1830H - Has it stopped working?
I started to feel the contractions all over again.... I know that pain increases as labour progresses, and the anesthecist did mention that we can increase the epidural level if required.... I asked the midwife, and they said that it is common, and she will need to check on my progress of dilation before deciding if more epidural should be administered.  If I'm nearly there... then I cant be given more epidural as it may be dangerous for the bb....

Guess what? I was told that i was nearly there... no need for epidural... and I should get ready to push soon once I have the feeling =S

I really have no idea how I managed to push through the next 2 hours plus with the contractions... heh partly I was distracted, watching the movie showing on HBO (yes there is a TV in the labour ward, and I stupidly asked the nurse if the TV shows the delivery process or TV programmes =S).  The movie was Maid in Manhattan, 1st time I watched the whole show....

2000H - Is it show time yet?
The midwife came... and taught me how to push during the contractions.. as I was already fully dilated... We tried for about 20mins.. but no sign yet.  The midwife said the head popped out, and slide back in once I stop pushing....

2020 - A decision made..
The midwife consulted my gynae, who was on the way for the delivery (yeah his last clinic appointment was 8pm, guessed as much he will arrive abt 8 plus...).  My epidural has finished, n a decision had to be made if the epidural should continue... another dose was given, and I was asked to rest for a while...

2100 - the show begins!
Finally Dr John appeared at the doorway...  the 1st question he asked the midwife,"Should I do the C-section next door first?" I have not started to protest, my midwife quickly said,"Deliver this one 1st!"

I cant imagine if I have to wait any longer!

With the help of Dr John pushing from the top of the womb... you arrived in 20mins! super fast =)

I can't describe the elation when I first heard Daddy said,"Coming out!" n when u first cry =) I just kept laughing... omg. weirdest reaction =P

When I first held you in my arms... u were so tiny! hehe and I couldn't help noticing your lovely dimple =)

By 2230 - Ready to move to inpatient ward
We told the nurse breastfeeding to start next morning as I was having headaches from epidural, n you just latched on n slept, refusing to suckle... so we took a gamble......

16 March 2011

0900H - first attempt to breastfeed... but you were full... so I expressed some milk out for your next feed...  n that gave me some rest =) luckily we managed to get u latched on for the next few tries =)

really magical feeling for breastfeeding mummies =)

though it is really difficult from the start =)

3 weeks have passed... and we are all still getting used to all the new happenings... n I guess there will still be more happenings every other days...

love you lots,
Daddy n Mummy
